No change to Property Tax in Sligo

A majority of Sligo councillors have decided to keep the local property tax at its current rate.

Their decision means the 15% increase agreed by councillors last year stays in place.

The tax is set from a level that reverts back to a baseline each year, regardless of increases or decreases previously made.

Independent Socialist Councillor Declan Bree had proposed a 15% reduction on the baseline which, in effect, would have meant a 30% reduction in Sligo's case.

Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry says he had hoped the tax could have been brought back to its base level, which would have meant dropping the 15% increase that was decided last year.
