Teachers in the North West are believed to be unsurprised by developments between the ASTI and government over the Croke Park Pay deal.
Schools around the country including some in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim received a letter this week stating that any surplus teachers would be facing redundancy instead of the usual redeployment.
Second Level schools in the region have been told that any surplus TUI member teachers will be redeployed but the government has removed that protection for ASTI members.
The Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland has pledged to immediately ballot its membership on industrial action if any of its members are made redundant raising the prospect of disruptions to state exams this June.
The union's North West representative Neil Curran believes the threat is direct punishment for the union's refusal to enter the Croke Park pay deal.
