Nursing homes say more than 30 beds available in north west that could ease hospital overcrowding

There are more than 30 beds available in nursing homes in the north west that acute hospitals could use for discharged patients so as to free-up much-needed beds.

That's according to Nursing Homes Ireland, which says that, as of yesterday evening, there were 19 nursing home beds available in Donegal, three in Leitrim and at least 9 in Sligo.

Nursing Homes Ireland says these available beds are not being taken up despite increased pressure on hospitals to free-up beds.

Tadhg Daly, CEO of Nursing Homes Ireland, says it has members who are aware of patients requiring discharge to nursing home care but many of these patients have difficulty in getting funding support or with other bureaucracy.
