Only 6 new Garda Sergeants allocated for north west

Only 6 newly promoted Garda Sergeants are to be allocated to the north west.

5 are being placed in the Sligo/Leitrim Garda Division and only 1 in the Donegal Garda Division

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris promoted 113 Garda members at the end of January and they've now taken up their new positions.

It brings the total number of Garda Sergeants to 2,079 - the highest number since 2010.

Newly re-elected Sligo/Leitrim TD Martin Kenny has served as a Sinn Fein's party spokesperson on Justice and equality.

While Deputy Kenny welcomes the allocations, he says it doesn't add to the number of Gardaí on the ground:
