That was Taoiseach Micheal Martin, speaking in Castlebaldwin in County Sligo this (Monday) afternoon as he officially opened the new N4 dual carriageway to Collooney, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country.

The Taoiseach said little did anyone know before work on the €80m 14-kilometre road project began two years ago that the world would be hit by a pandemic.

The Taoiseach said the new N4  route is important for a number of reasons, including quality of life, journey times, economic impact and safety.

He also said roads such as the new dual carriageway -- and other investments -- will make a very significant difference to the north west.

The main contractors for construction of the new road was Roadbridge.

Its chief executive, Conor Gilligan, spoke to Niall Delaney during this afternoon's special broadcast of the North West Today Show from Castlebaldwin to mark the official opening of the new road.

Niall began by asking Mr Gilligan about the challenges faced by workers on the project.
