Overcrowding crisis 'an appalling mess'

The winter crisis in hospitals has been described as an appalling mess that could have been partly avoided.

That's according to Sligo Leitrim Independent TD Marian Harkin who has also accused the Government of acting too late and that its winter plan did not deliver.

Deputy Harkin was speaking in the Dail last night during a motion on measures to increase capacity in the health service.

While acknowledging that the Government has increased spending in the health service, Deputy Harkin believes that the overall plan has been badly handled:
