A petition calling for the old railway from Collooney to Athenry to made into a Greenway has now received over 18,000 signatures and growing.

It's organised by The Western Trail Campaign which is a community campaign made up of people from Sligo, Mayo and Galway.

The group hope to turn the 130km old line into a Greenway under the governments Greenway Strategy initiative and are calling on the Councils of Sligo, Mayo and Galway to seize the opportunity.

The group say that it would become a large tourist attraction and boost local economies that it passes through.

Brendan Quinn of the Western Trail Campaign says the plan would be to break it up into 3 different areas, with each under the administration of different County Councils.
