Pressure mounting on McConalogue to appoint regulator for beef industry

Pressure is increasing on the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, to appoint an independent beef regulator.

 

The Beef Plan Movement have reiterated their calls in recent days for the establishment of such a position.

The Beef plan movement says the introduction of a regulator would afford greater protection for the producers and indeed consumers with an emerging international trading environment now on the horizon.

Recently there has a large drop in beef prices which is causing huge levels of frustration among farmers that claim demand, especially among supermarkets, is still exceptionally high.

 

Sligo farmer Gerard Pilkington is the Vice Chairman of the national Beef Plan movement.  He says  a beef regulator needs to be appointed and not a food Ombudsman:
