There were joyous and proud scenes at the headquarters of Sligo County Council yesterday evening as a civic reception was given for the Aintree Grand National winning jockey, Derek Fox.
The reception was hosted by the Cathaoirleach, Councillor Hubert Keaney, who praised the Sligo Town native for his skill, courage and determination, describing him as a great role model.
Cllr Keaney said Derek's success on the horse 'One for Arthur' was 'one of the most remarkable sporting achievements by any Sligo person.'
Among the large attendance were members of Derek's family, including his mother Jacqueline; his neighbours from Emmett Place in Sligo, as well as those who mentored and supported him so far in his horseracing career.
On behalf of the people of Sligo, Councillor Keaney had this message for Derek:
