An Independent South Sligo councillor has called on the council to seek immediate funding to upgrade the R294.
Margaret Gormley raised the issue at a meeting of the Tubbercurry/Ballymote Municipal District this week.
She says that the road is a main route connecting Ballina in Co. Mayo to Boyle in Co. Roscommon and right through South Sligo.
In 2005 a report was submitted by Sligo, Roscommon and Mayo councils to carry out improvement works on the road but nothing was ever done.
Councillor Gormley says upgrading the road is a matter of public safety.
