Saolta has given reassurances that the imminent closure of Sligo University Hospital's Chronic Pain Unit is temporary.

The unit is set to close this Friday as the two current consultants there are both moving to new roles.

In a statement, Saolta say that recruitment to fill these posts is ongoing and that they are doing everything they can to minimise impact on patients.

As an interim measure, and until the new consultants are in post, alternative arrangements are being put in place for patients who are currently attending the service.

Appointments are being offered in Kingsbridge Sligo for procedures and exploring outsourcing with NTPF.

A locum Consultant will also commence next month to oversee the governance of the Pain Management and Education a psychologically-based rehabilitative treatment for people with persistent pain.
