There have been renewed calls for medical cards to be issued to patients that receive a cancer diagnosis.

The Department of Health were sharply criticised at yesterday's monthly meeting of Leitrim County Council for failing to award medical cards to people that are currently receiving treatment for cancer.

Manorhamilton MD Councillor Padraig Fallon highlighted the plight of a constituent that recently was given such a diagnosis and was struggling to secure a medical card.

Cllr. Fallon says added stress to somebody that is in such a situation is far from ideal.
