Rescues at Rosses Point, Knocknarea yesterday, Sunday

Local rescue services were in action over the weekend, with four swimmers having been taken to Sligo University Hospital for assessment after they got into difficulty off Rosses Point beach yesterday afternoon.

Two were airlifted by the Coast Guard Rescue 118 helicopter.

Another was rescued by the Sligo Bay RNLI lifeboat and taken to the lifeboat station, where an ambulance arrived.

One managed to get ashore unaided.

All four were seasoned swimmers but got into difficulty due to a swell when trying to get ashore. Onlookers on the beach dialled for the emergency services.

It was one of the latest in an increasing number of rescues as a result of more people now swimming in the sea.

Also yesterday afternoon, Sligo/Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team carried an injured walker who had sustained a fractured ankle off Knocknarea mountain.

Ten mountain rescue volunteers and ambulance service paramedics were involved in the rescue of the victim, who was taken by ambulance to hospital from a car park at the base of the mountain.
