Motorists are being advised to exercise caution this morning following heavy rainfall overnight.

Surface water is being reported on a number of routes across Sligo and Leitrim.

Met Eireann is also warning of the potential of spot flooding in the North West.

In a statement this morning, Gardai are urging all road users to take precautions when driving in wet conditions.

With the wet and dull conditions there will be reduced visibility. Slow down and allow extra distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
Aquaplaning can occur when the water separates your tyres from the road surface.  Should this happen, do not brake fast, do not pull sharply on the steering wheel, do ease off the accelerator, let the car slow down itself until the tyres regain their grip, keep a steady hand and steer with small movements until your vehicle is back on course. Do not steer or brake until the grip is restored.
Check your tyres regularly. It is recommended that you change your tyres when the tread depth falls below 3mm. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm.
