Rural Independent group of TD's will be invited to engage in Government talks

The prospect of playing a part in the next government could be moving a step closer for a local TD.

The Rural Independent group of TD's are to be invited in the coming days to engage in formal talks on the formation of a new Government.

Sligo Leitrim Independent Deputy, Marian Harkin is a member of the Rural Independent group.

Its understood Fianna Fail and Fine Gael will also open formal discussions with the Kerry Independent Deputies Michael and Danny Healy-Rae.

Negotiations on a new programme for Government will continue today.

It is also expected the Social Democrats will announce its intention to end contact with the bigger parties, and remain in opposition.
