It has been revealed that maritime patrol from France, Norway and the UK have been monitoring waters off the coasts of Donegal and Sligo.
The Sunday Times reports that there has been suspected Russian activity close to the Corrib gas pipeline and other subsea cables.
It's understood that the maritime patrol aircraft have been monitoring the situation for the last week.
The Boeing Poseidon P-8 aircraft, sent by Britain and Norway, flew off Sligo and Donegal and is said to specialise in tracking submarines, while another French plane flew off the Clare coast.
Russian submarines are said to be present in Irish waters regularly, but their proximity to the Corrib gas pipeline is what raised the concerns.
