A shortage of engineers is hindering progress on making plans for a one-way traffic system in Collooney, a meeting of Sligo councillors has been told.
At this week's meeting of councillors from the Sligo/Drumcliffe Municipal District, Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Healy asked that a trial-run be done for a one-way system on Main Street in Collooney to see if it would work.
However, Area Engineer Declan Noone said the council could not do a trial run until they knew the cost of a permanent solution to the traffic issues involved.
He said they needed to develop a design . . . and that depended on resources.
Councillors heard that because of the buoyant economy and the number of major projects now underway, it is difficult to recruit engineers on short-term contracts.
Cllr Healy said councillors needed to work with the council and the CEO to try to resolve the staffing issue.
