Six new special classes have been announced for Sligo and Leitrim ahead of the next academic year.
For 2025/2026, there will be designated classes located Drumcong NS in Ballinamore, Scoil Naomh Molaise in Grange, Scoil Ursula, Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré, and Mercy College in Sligo.
There has long been issues raised locally over the lack of special classes across the North West, with many children not able to attend nearby schools due to capacity.
Minister of State Marian Harkin TD has welcomed the development and emphasised the importance of inclusive education.
Minister Harkin highlighted that the integration of such classes within mainstream schools means that they can participate in some activities alongside their peers, fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
