Funding is available to allow conservation works to be carried out on monuments that are deemed to be significant and in need of urgent support.

The aim is to encourage access to monuments and improve their presentation and also to build their resilience to help them withstand the effects of climate change.

Local projects awarded funding this year include €100,000 each for Moygara Castle and Ennisrone Castle.

St Feichin's is Ballysadare is getting €97,900 while Court Abbey and Aghanagh Church and Graveyard are both set to receive €30,000.

Leitrims St. Mogues Abbey has been awarded over €54,000.

Donegal however, was the only county in Ireland that wasn't awarded any funding.

The fund is also set to create thousands of hours of employment for specialist craftspeople and traditional skills practitioners.
