Sligo officially becomes the European Capital of Volunteering for 2017 today.
The title will be handed over from 2016 capital London at a ceremony in the English capital taking place at lunchtime
The award is seen as a celebration of the volunteer work done in the county, particularly during the recent Fleadh Ceoil and the huge GAA volunteering.
Independent MEP from Sligo Marian Harkin said today represents the culmination of her initiative in 2011 which led to the awards creationg.

Speaking to Ocean FM from the ceremony in London MEP Harkin said the award is for all the people of Sligo who engage in volunteering activities.
