Sligo county councillors have supported calls for those who have been adopted to access their own health records.
In a motion put forward at a recent meeting of the local authority by Independent Cllr Marie Casserly who requested the council write to the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs requesting her department acknowledge adoptee identity rights.
The local election candidate said adoptees should be allowed to see their own information on health and heritage similar to other citizens.
Cllr Casserly says she put forward the proposals on behalf of Aitheantas -an Adoptee Identity Rights Group.
