Sligo council, gardai appeal for people to adhere to 5km travel limit

Sligo County Council says it has had to close amenity areas in the county, including beaches, because of the large number of people travelling beyond the five kilometre limit to them, with social distancing not being adhered to.

The council is now implementing the new public safety measures because of concerns from the government and the HSE over what they describe as 'the rampant transmission' of the Covid-19 virus in the community.

The council says it is now working with An Garda Siochana to restrict access to amenity areas across the county to prevent large numbers congregating.

It's a repeat of what happened when the pandemic first emerged last March and April.

The amenity areas now affected include Mullaghmore, Streedagh, Culleenamore, Enniscrone and Rosses Point.beaches.

Other amenities with restricted access include Half Moon Bay in Hazelwood, Dooney Rock, Slish Wood, Union Wood, Benbulben scenic walk at Gortarowey, Mitchell Curley Park in Sligo town and Strandhill promenade.

The council says it hopes that these actions will prevent further widespread community transmission and help in the effort to save lives.

Acting Chief Executive of Sligo County Council Tom Kilfeather said the decision to restrict access was not taken lightly.
