A Sligo councillor is calling for the anniversaries of the birth of two very different people be marked -- one was an exotic dancer, the other a saint.

At this week's meeting of councillors from the Sligo-Drumcliffe Municipal District, Councillor Donal Gilroy called for the county council to liaise with local government agencies in Bavaria in Germany about plans to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth in Grange of Lola Montez.

He proposed that a commemorative plaque be erected at the site of the former Married Quarters housing area in Grange, where she was born.

She was a dancer and actress who became famous as a courtesan and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

Councillor Gilroy agreed she was 'a very colourful character.'

Cllr Gilroy also proposed that the council provide funding to commemorate the 1,500th anniversary of the birth of St Colmcille, who had close links to Drumcliffe and Inishmurray.

He agreed there was something of a difference between the two people whose anniversaries he wished to see commemorated.
