Sligo Councillor raises concerns over Celtic Tiger estates

A Sligo councillor claims local authorities have been able to avoid taking over certain housing estates because they were built during the Celtic Tiger years under certain tax schemes.

Fianna Fail Councillor Joe Queenan says there is now a major problem in many of these estates with issues such as public lighting.

He told a recent budget meeting of the council that the houses, many of them built as holiday homes, were eventually sold on and are now occupied permanently by people who are paying various charges, including property tax.

But he says those people are not getting the services they deserve, such as public lighting.
