Sligo councillor says some 'low-call' numbers may cost more than expected

So-called low-call numbers used by government departments may not really be low-call, according to a Sligo councillor.

Independent Declan Bree says the charge for some low-call government numbers can vary from a low of five cents per minute to a high of 31 cents.

Cllr Bree has now called for governments to stop describing these numbers -- usually starting with the digits 1890 -- as low call.

It was a proposal for which he received unanimous support at this week's meeting of Sligo Council.

He says members of the public use these numbers because they think they cost little.

But he has called for people to be warned about the possible high costs of such calls.
