Sligo exhibition to celebrate work of Fred Conlon

A county Sligo exhibition has opened to celebrate the life and work of sculptor Fred Conlon.

 

The Hamilton Gallery, located on the first floor of Number 4 Castle Street in Sligo Town will mark the 20th anniversary of Fred Conlon’s passing with a display of several pieces of his own as well as his son Finn’s.

A native of Killeenduff, Easkey, Fred Conlon was a former lecturer at IT Sligo and initiated the sculpture department in the fledgling Art Department when he joined in 1972.

 

Over the next 15 years, he inspired the next generation of artists, generously sharing his talent, knowledge and skills.

In 1987 Fred took early retirement from the college to pursue a full-time career as a sculptor until his untimely illness and death in 2005.

 

His son Finn has also become a sculptor with this exhibition his first solo one in Sligo and the first time he has exhibited his work alongside his father.

 

The exhibition which runs until March 1st.
