A Sligo Garda Inspector is to be awarded a Scott Medal later today.
Inspector Joseph Finnegan is one of eight Gardai being recognised for their bravery in the line of duty.
Inspector Finnegan, originally from Templeboy, along with his colleague Sergeant Kieran Flynn are being awarded Scott medals for their courage near Lady's Bay, Béal Deirg, Co Mayo, on 25 October 1997 where a group of people became trapped in a sea cave.
They saved the lives of three people that day and also recovered the bodies of two others.
The ceremony takes place in Dublin later.
