Sligo TD says latest CSO figures shows the importance of promoting Ireland abroad

A Sligo Leitrim TD says the evidence provided by reports that confirm the numbers of tourists visiting Ireland is on the decline should be justification alone for politicians using the St Patrick’s Day celebrations to promote the country internationally.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office show the number of tourists visiting Ireland fell sharply in January, down 25% compared to January 2024.

338,900 foreign visitors completed a trip to Ireland in January which is below the 2024 and 2023 levels.

Visitor spending, excluding air fares, was also down, dropping to 27.9% to €214m.

Sligo Leitrim Deputy, Eamon Scanlon says tourism is a big driver of the North West’s economy.

The Fianna Fáil TD says it’s vital that every opportunity including the Taoiseach visiting the White House to meet President Trump is seized.
