A Sligo Leitrim TD has described nursing homes as one of the keys in solving the overcrowding crisis.
Last week, the HSE's interim chief executive says it's too soon to say if the health service has moved past the peak of overcrowding in hospitals after trolley figures decreased slightly compared to the week previous.
Independent TD Marian Harkin says one of the roots to the ongoing problem is that some of those patients no longer need to be in an acute bed but rather in some sort step down facility.
However with 17 nursing homes having closed last year, Deputy Harkin says there's simply nowhere for people to go and that the funding model needs to change urgently:
