Sligo University Hospital one of most overcrowded facilities in 2024

Sligo University Hospital was one of the most overcrowded facilities nationwide in 2024.

 

 

Figures published by the INMO place the facility fourth overall in terms of patients waiting on trolleys throughout the year.

Over 7,600 people waited for a bed at the hospital over the course of the year.

It reflects a decrease in the number of those who waited over the course of 2023, however, where over 8,193 people were left without a bed at the facility.

 

 

Letterkenny University Hospital also recorded a decrease in the number waiting in 2024 compared to the previous year.

 

 

Almost 5,000 patients waited at the facility from January to December, 450 less than 2023 figures.

 

 

In a statement, the INMO say the next Government now has an opportunity to drastically improve the chronic overcrowding issues in hospitals right across the country.

 

 

They continue to say 2024 has seen an unacceptable number of patients on trolleys.

 

 

In conclusion the say nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals should not have to bear the brunt of public anger due to poor planning and lack of capacity in the health service year in, year out.
