The Chronic Pain Unit in Sligo University Hospital is to close today.
It was revealed earlier this week that the unit was closing as the two consultants working there had taken up roles in other hospitals.
It's thought that there are currently around 1,500 patients on a waiting list for appointments at the unit.
Assurances were sought in the Dáil yesterday by Independent TD Marian Harkin, but she was told by Tánaiste Micheal Martin that the hospital would have to appoint locum consultants until permanent appointments could be made.
No time frame for those permanent appointments is currently in place.
