Smoky coal ban needs proper enforcement

More needs to be done to tackle the smuggling of illegal smoky coal in the north west.

That's according to Arigna Fuel CEO, Peter Leyden who says he doesn't have faith in the Government enforcing the national smoky coal ban from September 2022.

He says successive Ministers have called for a carbon tax, or similar, with Alan Kelly first proposing a full coal ban in 2015.

He says since then, three other Ministers have proposed measures and now Minister Eamonn Ryan is the latest to propose changes.
