A Sligo/Leitrim TD is hitting out at proposals to increase the pension age to 67.
A Sinn Féin bill aimed to prevent the pension age being increased will be debated in the Dáil at the end of this month.
Deputy Martin Kenny says the plan to increase the pension age to 67 years in January 2021 and then to 68 years in 2028 will mean that today's workers and especially those approaching retirement may not get their state pension at 66.
He says workers whose contracts mean they have to retire at 65 years are forced on to the dole for one year before getting their old age pensions at 66.
Deputy Kenny says it's an unacceptable situation for people who have worked hard and paid their taxes all their working lives to end their careers seeking dole payments.
