Sonar search of Spanish Armada site to take place this summer

Sonar search of Spanish Armada site to take place this summer

Sonar searches of the Spanish Armada wreck site off the North Sligo coast at Streedagh are expected to take place this summer.

It follows the recovery two years ago of cannons, a cauldron and carriage wheels from the sea bed.

The work is being carried out by the Underwater Archaeology Unit of the National Monuments Service.

The sonar search will also look at sand movements caused by tides and storms and if anything at the site is in danger.

Eddie O Gorman, of the Grange Armada Development Association, says the sonar searches are part of a schedule of works along the entire Irish coastline and are weather dependant.

He says such constant monitoring of the site is important:
