Rural roads are being targeted with speed checks today.
Gardaí are focusing on the routes, as almost four out of five road fatalities so far this year have occurred on roads where an 80 kilometre per hour speed limit applies.
National Slow Down Day is in effect across the country until 7am tomorrow.
Roads are now busier as more people return to work.
But Donegal County Council Road Safety Officer Brian O Donnell, speaking on the NWT Show, says speeds have not reduced.

There also a concern about the number of deaths as a result of accidents on rural roads.

Brian O Donnell also says that although today's campaign focuses on speed, the other basics of road safety, such as not using a mobile phone, must not be forgotten.

By lunchtime today (Thursday), a number of motorists throughout the north west have already been detected speeding on National Slow-Down Day.
They included a motorist going at 109 kilometres per hour in a 100km zone on the N15 at Carrick, near Laghey in Co. Donegal and another, on the R280 Bellanaboy, Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim, travelling at 89km in an 80 kilometre zone.
