Success for local students at BT Young Scientist Exhibition

Success for local students at BT Young Scientist Exhibition

There was success for students from Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal at this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

 

Abbey Vocational School students Jane Faulkner and Robyn Given were the winners in the Senior Biological and Ecological Group category for their project 'Which is the most 'essential' essential oil at preventing fungal mould on fruit'.

Fellow Abbey Vocational School student Samaire Fern was highly commended in the Senior individual Social and Behavioural category for her project 'An investigation into the effects of videogames and team sports on the understanding of concepts of game theory and problem-solving in students.'

 

Alastair Cian of Coláiste Cholmcille took home the top junior individual prize in the social and behavioural sciences category with his project ‘The gut microbiome, what do YOU know?’

Megan Bohan and Ríona O’Farrell of Ursuline College Sligo won first prize in the Intellectual Property Office of Ireland Award for their project ‘Feathered Frequencies’.

 

Another Ursuline College student, Bláithín Brady placed third in the intermediate individual chemical, physical and mathematical sciences category entitled ‘Serene sonics: Investigating the use of binaural tones to alter brain waves.’

 

Sligo Grammar School students Trevor Horan and Callum Scott’s project ‘What is the effect of music on creative thinking in junior and senior cycle students’ was highly commended.

 

While Ava Gaffney and Nicole Kellett of Ballinamore Community School took home two awards, The Heanet Award and first intermediate group for ‘Are our bus routes effective?’
