A Sligo woman has received an undisclosed compensation and apology after being left with life-changing injuries following a routine procedure.
Kathleen Healy, of Rathedmond in Sligo was undergoing an endoscopic procedure at Sligo University Hospital in 2022 when her throat perforated.
It’s understood that Mrs Healy presented to the hospital initially with pain and heartburn.
However, following on from the surgical procedure, she developed an infection and required lengthy intensive care.
It was also claimed the event had a psychological impact on Mrs Healy, as she became entirely dependent on her family, forcing to her leaving her home in Sligo to a nursing home in Dublin.
The details of the settlement were not revealed but it’s understood that it will allow Mrs Healy to avail of the additional services she needs.
An apology has also been issued on behalf of Sligo University Hospital and the HSE to Mrs Healy and her family.
