Taoiseach's announcement on Traveller recognition welcomed by Sligo group

The Sligo Traveller Support Group is welcoming today's announcement by the Taoiseach to recognise Travellers as an ethnic group for the first time.

It follows a lengthy campaign which has been ongoing for decades to recognise this minority group officially.

Several human rights groups have also supported these calls including the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and a number of UN committees.

A report just last month highlighted a number of disadvantages suffered by Travellers in education, accommodation and health.

Jamie Murphy, the Men's Development worker with the Sligo Traveller Support Group says it's a welcome move:
