Transport minister Shane Ross has admitted there isn't enough money to maintain the standard of local and regional roads.
The minister says he's secured a 10 per cent increase in the budget for the upkeep of local roads in 2017.
But that only brings the budget up to 275 million euro - less than half of the 580 million that's needed.
The minister says it will be the year 2020 before the budget for upkeep is in line with what's needed:
