Transport officials living in 'Cuckoo Land' over new roads scheme

A south Sligo Councillor says it's outrageous that the Transport expects people living in rural communities to start paying to repair their own roads.

Independent Councillor Margaret Gormley is referring to the Community Involvement Scheme announced recently by Minister Shane Ross recently.

It's a voluntary scheme where communities can get a grant if they contribute at least 15% of their own funds towards improving 'lightly-trafficked' public roads.

Councillor Gormley says after recently turning down a request to grant more funding for Class three roads, she finds it outrageous that the Department has put forward such a scheme.

She says whoever came up with the scheme in Shane Ross' Department is living in 'Cloud Cuckoo-Land':
