Uncertainty surrounds new concrete block levy

A Spokesperson for the the Mica Action Group is accusing the Government of bowing to pressure from the construction industry by not introducing the controversial concrete levy.

It's being reported that the Government's made a U-turn on its plans to bring in a concrete block levy.

The Business Post reports a backlash from builders has led to its decision to postpone the proposal to help pay for mica redress.

The construction industry claims the 10 per cent levy on concrete could delay building homes and cause house prices to rise.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Agriculture says the concrete block levy is still on the table, amid reports government is about to make a u-turn on it.

Those in the building sector claim the 10 per cent levy will cause house prices to rise, and delay home building.

The controversial levy, introduced to pay for the Mica redress scheme, was expected to be delayed, watered down or even abandoned.

Minister Charlie McConalogue says government is currently discussing how the levy will be applied.
