Varadkar 'running rings' around Martin at joint press conferences, claims MacSharry

Sligo/Leitrim TD Marc MacSharry is urging Taoiseach Michael Martin not to do any further joint press conferences with Tanaiste Leo Varadkar.

Deputy MacSharry says it's because the Fine Gael Leader has been 'running rings' around him.

Deputy MacSharry reportedly told a party meeting that the Taoiseach's interaction with his parliamentary party left a lot to be desired.

The virtual meeting was conducted on Zoom and was marked by criticism from several other TDs about the party's performance, particularly when it came to communication.

That's according to today's Irish Times, with sources telling the newspaper about Deputy MacSharry's advice in relation to joint press conferences.

It is understood Deputy MacSharry said there was a lack of consultation; the approach was not leadership and neither was it management.

He reportedly described it as a teacher-pupil relationship, where the parliamentary party are empty vessels eager to learn from the master.

Deputy MaCSharry was unavailable for comment today but he has voiced similar views in the past.

Meanwhile, Micheal Martin himself says debate and differences of opinion are welcome.

But he says it's also important the party does not undermine itself.
