The new EU Veterinary Medicine Regulation has the potential to severely impact on competition in the supply of services to farmers.

 

That’s according to a leading farm official in the North West.

Concerns have also been expressed that if passed the changes will threaten the future viability of Licensed Merchant stores and veterinary pharmacies throughout the country.

 

Farmers locally are calling on the Department of Agriculture to resolve the issue of prescribing of these products.

The Health Products Regulatory Authority has now made a number of changes including a prescription will have to be issued before products can be purchased.

 

As a result it is expected that serious issues for the competitive supply of these products if Suitably Qualified Persons in the licensed merchants are not allowed to prescribe these products for farmers.

 

Brendan McLoughlin, the Chairman of the IFA in Donegal has been speaking to the Ocean FM farm desk.
