West Sligo man who lost his wife says new legislation on maternal deaths welcome

A west Sligo man whose wife died shortly after giving birth to her fourth child is welcoming new legislation that will ensure an inquest is carried out in the case of all maternal deaths.

The new bill which will overhaul coronial legislation was prioritised by the Justice Minister this week.

The announcement comes months after a conference in Galway heard that Ireland was failing to meet its international obligations to hold “effective impartial investigations” into all unnatural deaths.

Sean Rowlette whose wife Sally died in 2013 at Sligo University Hospital says this U-turn by the government on this is very welcome.

in 2015, a court in Sligo returned a verdict of medical misadventure after hearing the details in his wife's case where she should have been brought into hospital earlier.
