Western Distributor Road in Sligo opens to traffic from 4pm this afternoon

One of the biggest road projects in the north west will open to traffic today when vehicles start travelling on the new Western Distributor Road in Sligo from 4pm.

Costing more than €12m, the two-lane, three kilometre route joins the N4 from the Caltragh Interchange to the R292 at Ballydoogan, on the west side of Sligo town.

It includes footpaths, cycleways and facilities for pedestrians, as well as a new road bridge over the Sligo/Dublin railway line.

Sligo County Council acting CEO Tom Kilfeather, who has been Director of Services in change of infrastructure, says the new road is of crucial importance to the development of Sligo and, in particular, allowing development of a new IDA business park at Oakfield.

Mr Kilfeather has been telling Ocean FM News about the background to the project.
