Sligo County Council's acting chief executive says the new Western Distributor Route, which opens to traffic from 4 o'clock this afternoon, will help promote all of the western side of Sligo town for future development.
Tom Kilfeather says that because the new route allows access to a new IDA business park at Oakfield, it enables the development authority to market Sligo as a key regional growth centre.
He also says it should relieve congestion on the Inner Relief Road.
Mr Kilfeather has been telling Ocean FM News about the significance of the project, a key part of which included providing routes for pedestrians and cyclists.
