Widespread shock expressed by local politicians to HSE hospital bed allocation

It's being reported today that none of the 162 additional beds are being created in hospitals this year will be allocated to Saolta Hospital Group which includes Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals.

The Irish times claim that the HSE has disclosed to them under freedom of information figures that 162 of the acute beds listed in the plan are additional while 99 are replacements.

Sixty per cent of the additional beds are being provided in one institution, the Mater hospital in Dublin.

Overcrowding has been a long running issue at the two main hospitals in the north west in recent times.

Sligo Drumcliff Councillor Thomas Walsh says once again the north west has been over looked when it comes to investment in the health service:

The fact that no additional beds have been available to Letterkenny University Hospital has also been condemned by local elected representatives.  Sinn Fein TD  Pádraig Mac Lochlainn says it beggars belief.
