It’s emerged that so-called ‘zombie spiders’ have been discovered in a cave on the Cavan-Fermanagh border.
The discovery was made by speleologist and cave explorer, Tim Fogg in recent days at The White Fathers cave.
The fungus forces spiders to come out of the crevices in the walls and it then kills them, spreads its spores and infects more spiders.
While fungi have no nervous system or brain, it can manipulate the behaviour of the spiders with chemicals.
Speaking to Ocean FM, Tim Fogg says the species of fungi hasn't been found elsewhere in the north west but he is confident that more samples of it could be found:
