Condolences

Maurice Mcleod

I first met John when I was elected as a local councillor in 2018. I'll be honest, I was terrified of him. He seemed really forceful and clearly knew a lot about the local community. He was outspoken in every meeting and would never let his local representatives get away with anything he disagreed with. Over the years, I realised that he was just an incredibly dedicated member of his community. He would do lone patrols of the estate, attended almost every meeting and was a pivotal part of the improvements that the Doddington and Rollo estates have seen in recent years. He volunteered at the vaccine centre and helped the people he lived alongside in far too many ways to recount. The Dodd and Battersea are poorer, duller places for his passing. In a world where many people would rather not get involved, or where everyone thinks making a difference is someone else's job - we need more Johns. I know I speak for all Councillors who have had the pleasure of working with you including Aydin Dikerdem, Paula Walker, Juliana Annan and Tony Belton. Rest in Peace and condolences to the whole family.

Goodness where do I start, have known John through MAFF pre Kate and niamhs arrival for years What a powerhouse of a person he was, totally loyal and stood up for his beliefs. Sports day, was the day of Kates arrival BUT he had the football kits, so made a pit stop to work with a very heavily pregnant Karen to drop kits off !! One sports day I was minding Kate whilst he ran to the loo, a man passed by with a can of Guinness to whichkate shouted oh thats daddy's juice. To this day that's what Guinness is to me. He was great Colleague and in recent years refereed the darts trophy at sports day, ( for my late partner), none through Covid-19 & last year he fell and broke both his arms, should have. Met up at Christmas but his freezer broke, so arranged to meet this year. He will be sorely missed for his stoic counting and devotion to the darts trophy. Sorry to all the family especially niamh and Kate who he adored with every bone ,he was so proud of you both. X

Played football with John for many years for the mighty Agricola. A better team mate you couldn’t wish to have. Never let you down. Always supportive. And just always there when you needed him. Utterly devastated to hear he’s gone. So, so unfair. My heart and love goes out to the whole family. Magnus

I knew John from his MAFF days and he was a real Personality (with a capital P!). I also played football with him for Agricola and was his centre half for the tines he was in goal. Such sad news. I worked with John in MAFF and Defra and played football with him for Agricola. For some years I had the fun task of organising the team. John always turned up when he said he would, gave 100% for the team (including several injuries!) and was the life and soul in the pub afterwards: an exemplary team mate. Big loss xx

Mykhal Bareham

There will never be another one like John, a gentleman is described as a person who gives more to the world than they take out…John was a gentleman for sure! I knew him for a very short time, it was obvious, nonetheless. I first met John at Battersea Park School, he was an invigilator for my GCSE & A-levels, I remember he always came to that job very correct and led as an example to many of us students! I was later lucky enough to meet John in his household, and once I was thrilled to be able to watch his mind race through the local Trivia night, at which I had little success, John however seemed fluent in a huge variety of topics, I was very proud at that time, to be a part of that. The successes of his daughters are a beaming example of Johns attitude too. He was outspoken and honest, there was no bs with John! I can’t speak for Kate, but Niamh has many of the wonderful qualities that made John such a great man! He will be missed by the Bareham Clan!
