Leitrim Councillor questions decision to force owners of vacant homes be forced to pay higher property Tax

With ongoing attempts continuing to be made to solve the housing crisis it now seems that those who own a second property that is vacant will be forced to pay three times the property tax rate on it.

The new tax will target 60,000 properties across Ireland and it will come into effect at the start of November.

It is aimed at making more housing available by encouraging those who own empty houses to put them up for sale or into the rental market.

Meanwhile yesterday it was confirmed that Over 3,500 council homes all over Ireland lay empty at the end of the first six months of this year, according to new figures.

Indeed 216 of these houses owned by County Council’s are in in the counties of Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.
